About ACIS

Overview

ACIS designs and teaches courses in insurance law and practice for Australia’s leading universities and insurance organisations. Our program spans classes that introduce the basic principles and framework of the industry to advanced courses that engage with the complex contractual, regulatory and corporate matters of insurance law.

Our Students

Our courses are suitable for anyone who intends to connect, work, advise or advance within the insurance industry. Students will include policymakers, practicing lawyers, regulators, accountants, actuaries, underwriters, claim managers, insurance agents and brokers, loss adjusters and investigators, as well as those who are studying, or considering study in, insurance law or business.

Education Partners

The ACIS program was launched in 2021 in partnership with the University of Western Australia where ACIS delivers insurance law courses. ACIS also has a Corporate Program in which it develops courses for workplaces and industry associations.

We are proud to partner with the Financial Services Accountants Association for the provision of insurance accounting subjects.

Enrolment and Fees

You can undertake study with ACIS by enrolling with one of our education partners in a single ACIS course or a degree that includes ACIS units. Students are assessed according to the education partner’s protocols and receive a qualification upon successful completion. All student fees are paid to the education partner according to their course fee structure.

A range of courses and degree programs is available to ACIS students, including CPD courses. Please see the ACIS Courses & Enrolment page for more details.

Our Faculty and Teaching Model

The ACIS Faculty is made up of experts in the field, including academics, lawyers and insurance practitioners. Our classes involve close consideration of case studies and industry issues, with our faculty members leading discussion and guiding understanding of the legal context and considerations. Our teaching model provides students with the skills and insight required to identify insurance issues and available solutions quickly, efficiently, fairly and cost effectively.

The ACIS Mission

ACIS is a not-for-profit organisation established to provide a consistent, coherent, comprehensive and regular program of teaching and training in insurance law and practice across Australia. ACIS was founded by Dr Ian Enright, Fred Hawke, Greg Pynt, Samantha Traves and Professor Robert Merkin KC. Our organisation is supported by a distinguished and expert faculty, including academics, lawyers and insurance practitioners. The ACIS Board is responsible for maintaining our commitment to excellent teaching standards and the advancement of insurance education. Our aim is to provide students with the knowledge and insight required to contribute to and advance within the industry while being able to identify and address the challenges it faces.

The Importance of Insurance Education

The advancement of insurance education is of great benefit to the community. The industry is an integral part of our economy that pools and absorbs the financial risks associated with the activities of governments, businesses and individuals. The level of expertise required to understand the complex interweaving of legal matters and their effect on the community can only be attained through high-level education and training.
